A 45 year-old man has been sentenced to six months and two weeks imprisonment for stealing Kiwi portable polish valued at N48,000 at Prince Ebeano Supermarket in Lekki area of Lagos State, Nigeria.
The convict, Yusuf Abiodun, was sentenced by Magistrate, A.M Danies of Court 8, Igbosere Chief Magistrate Court, Lagos after he pleaded guilty to the two-court charge of stealing.
The offence is punishable under sections 287 and 168 (d) of the criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Police counsel, Inspector Reuben Solomon from Makoko division, had informed the court that the convict entered the Prince Ebeano Supermarket at Oniru Market, Lekki Lagos on 31 January, 2020 under the pretext of buying items and stole some portable Kiwi polish and escaped.
Solomon told the court that when the management of Ebeano Supermarket uncovered the theft after they audited their account books, they played out their CCTV camera mounted inside the supermarket and saw that the convict stole the Kiwi and placed him on alert and reported the matter to the police.
He said nemesis, however, caught up with the convict on 4 April, 2020 when he entered the supermarket again to steal some Kiwi and he was apprehended by the security men on duty who invited the police to arrest him.
Solomon said that during investigation the convict confessed to the crime, claiming hunger pushed him to steal the Kiwi.
Solomon added that when the convict was asked why he did not steal food items instead of Kiwi since he claimed hunger pushed him, he could not give reasonable answer.
