The battle for the vice presidential slot has begun in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after the completion of the national convention that led to the emergence of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 general election.

Atiku emerged as the winner of the PDP presidential primary after scoring 371 votes. His close contender, Governor Nyesom Wike, scored 237 votes in the election held in Abuja on Saturday, May 28, 2022.

Atiku, who hails from Adamawa State in the North-East geopolitical zone, will likely pick a southerner as his running mate for the 2023 election.

Recall that Atiku Abubakar also ran on the platform of the PDP in 2019 and his running mate was Peter Obi, who hails from the south-east geopolitical zone.

However, Obi dumped the opposition party a few days ago due to an internal crisis.

According to the PUNCH, Atiku’s running mate may come from the South-South geopolitical zone this time around.

In this case, these are the three governors who may get the PDP vice presidential slot.

1. Udom Emmanuel

Emmanuel is the outgoing governor of Akwa-Ibom State. He also contested in the just concluded primary election and took the fourth position.

Udom Emmanuel might be compensated with the VP slot due to his activeness in the PDP.

2. Ifeanyi Okowa

Okowa is the governor of Delta State with just a year to complete his second term. The governor is a strong ally of Atiku Abubakar.

The presidential candidate might pick him as his running mate for the 2023 election.

3. Nyesom Wike

Wike is the governor of Rivers State. He is a strong party man and a rugged politician.

He was the first runner-up in the just concluded primary election. The opposition party may pick Wike as running mate to pacify him
