Scores of Lagos residents who attended Mohbad’s candlelight procession tonight took to their heels when police allegedly threw tear gas to disperse them.
A candlelight procession and memorial concert for Mohbad held Thursday night, Sept. 21.
The procession started earlier in the evening at Lekki Phase 1 and the memorial concert began later by 8 PM at the Muri Okunola Park in Victoria Island, Lagos.
However, by 11pm, those still carrying on the procession at Lekki began crying out on social media that they were teargased by the police to disperse them.
Videos from the scene show people running as smoke from the tear gas rises all around them.
One video shows people falling while running.
This move has sparked outrage from Nigerians on X (formerly Twitter).
A candlelight procession for late singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, aka Mohbad, took place this evening in Lekki, Lagos State.
Nigerian celebrities came out to honour the memory of the late singer. Davido, Falz, Toke Makinwa, Ubi Frankin, and Dorcas Shola Fapson are some of the celebrities sighted at the event.
Fans and well-wishers also came out in their numbers for the procession.
As announced by the management of the late singer, the procession started at Lekki Phase 1 Gate and ended at Muri Okunola Park, Victoria Island, Lagos.
After the procession, a tribute concert began at 8 pm prompt and is still underway at Muri Okunola Park.
Videos from the scene show hundreds of candles lit by mourners to honour the singer.
Mohbad died on the 12th of September 2023, at the age of 27. Circumstances surrounding his death have sparked controversies.
