Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi arrived Istanbul on Monday afternoon and was expected to travel to Trabzon later to begin training with Turkish Super Lig outfit, Trabzonspor, reports Completesports.com.
Mikel penned a two – year deal with Trabzonspor late last month, ending speculation about his future after severing ties with Sky Bet Championship club, Middlesbrough.
He will enjoy the company of two other Nigerians, Ogenyi Onazi and Anthony Nwakaeme at the club.
The former Chelsea midfielder was granted an extended break after featuring for Nigeria at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt in which the Super Eagles finished third.
Mikel’s appearance at the competition was limited following the knee injury he picked up in Nigeria’s final Group B game against the Barea of Madagascar.
Mikel announced his retirement from international football after the Super Eagles’ Third-Place encounter against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia.
The 32- year- old once have also had stints in Norway with Lyn Oslo and in China with Tiajin Teda.
